Episode 13 of Brotherhood (roughly equivalent to episode 29 or 30 of the original series) is right where the new show starts to take the story into unfamiliar territory. As for problems that aren't exactly anyone's fault, this box set can't help but disappoint a little bit with where it ends. Whether that's a good thing depends on why you liked Roy in the first place – Miki might be even better when it comes to Roy's suave and serious sides, but he's not as good at the kind of sarcastic bite that Toru Okawa brought to the role. Shinichiro Miki, for instance, takes over the role of Roy Mustang, who was one of the original series' most popular characters. The effect of some other, smaller changes depends to some degree on your personal taste. If you're looking for flashy, detailed animation, you won't actually find a whole lot of it here. Brotherhood isn't big on extended action sequences, either – the fight scenes are simple, compact, and get themselves over with surprisingly quickly. Minor characters like Winry and Major Hughes don't get much screen time to play with, which is too bad if you happened to be a fan of theirs. On the other hand, it doesn't have room for the kind of emphasis on the supporting cast that made the original series a lot of fun. On the one hand, Brotherhood doesn't waste any time diving right into the exciting bits of the story. As an approach, this has its ups and downs. If it doesn't build towards that ongoing plot, it's not here. Likewise, there aren't any stand-alone episodes of the kind that the original series served up in the early going. It gives the impression that it's running on the assumption that the audience already knows something about the characters and how they relate to each other. It doesn't exactly skip over anything crucial, but it doesn't stop and smell the roses either. What Brotherhood does differently, for the most part, is get itself moving at a much faster pace. When it comes to the details, though, nobody's going to mistake one version of the story for another. So far, so familiar, at least in broad terms. Once again, we meet the Elric brothers, two aspiring young alchemists on a quest for the Philosopher's Stone, as they wander into the beginnings of a conspiracy that twists up their search into the center of a war for the fate of the world.

In fact, long-time Alchemist fans might well find themselves kind of bored for a while, as the show re-introduces a big, unwieldy cast and goes back over a lot of well-trod ground. Of course, the episodes on this set, the first 13 of a series that's well into six seasons now, don't have to make up much of anything as they go along.
